Ook aan de Zeekant werden vestingwerken gebouwd. De Hoofdtoren werd, samen met de Zeemuur in 1532 neergezet. De muren van de toren zijn 1,5 meter dik… Anderhalve meter…. Toevallig ook de juiste afstand in de huidige tijd…
De toren was voor die tijd met hoogmoderne kanonnen uitgerust. De weergang had natuurlijk musketschietgaten en door de moordgaten kon, door gebruik te maken van handpompen hete olie op de aanvallers en het water worden gepompt. En dan was er nog het grote fornuis, waarmee kogels voor de kanonnen konden worden verhit. Een hete kanonskogel die boven de waterlijn van een schip doel trof, kon het schip in brand zetten. Vuur en houten schepen gaan niet goed samen…
Maar al aan het einde van de 16e eeuw verloor de hooftoren haar militaire doel. De haven was zo groot geworden, dat de toren niet meer goed de haven kon verdedigen. Dus werd deze verkocht aan de Noordse Companie, die de rechten op de walvisvaart bezat.

Vandaag is het behoorlijk warm op het terrein. De laatste twee grootvermaakzaken zijn aangekomen en de fietsenstalling is ingericht. Ook is het éénrichtingsverkeer op de grond geschilderd.
